Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Jen grew up in close proximity to the natural world, which deeply shapes her work. Jen studied piano before transitioning to singing, working with Peter Allen in Halifax, NS. A classically trained soprano with deep roots in the Anglican choral tradition, she has had the good fortune of studying voice with sopranos Tracy Smith Bessette and Maghan McPhee, mezzo-soprano Sarah Myatt, and tenor James Smidt. An accomplished ensemble musician, she works regularly with many of Montreal’s finest vocal ensembles, including Ensemble ArtChoral and Voces Boreales. She is also in demand as a cantor and soloist in churches around Montreal, notably at the Church of St John the Evangelist and the Oratoire St-Joseph.
A flexible and creative musician, Jen’s projects draw from multiple disciplines and genres. She toured Nova Scotia as part of the early music ensemble Aureas Voces, and her interest in early music led to studies at McGill, where she participated in masterclasses led by Suzie LeBlanc and Shannon Mercer. Outside of McGill, Jen continued her exploration of Renaissance music at workshops led by Jonathon Adams, Charles Daniels, and Greg Skidmore, among others. Jen is also drawn to new music and extended vocal techniques, collaborating with the Halifax-based Rezound Project to produce improvised soundscapes incorporating ambient sounds and electronics. She was a participant at the 2025 NEO Voice Festival in LA, California, where she was a featured soloist and helped to premiere works by emerging composers.
Jen holds a BAH from the University of King’s College, Halifax. She is deeply grateful to the Canada Council for the Arts for their support.
